2The same was in the beginning with God.
The same (that is, the Word) was already in the beginning with God AND, according to the previous verse, was always God. Is this not a reinforcement of the two-fold nature and Being of the Word? Please note here how the Holy Spirit through the Apostle John reinforces the fact that the Word was already in the beginning both God and in a unique, intimate relationship, face-to-face with God. This point will be important, as we shall see later.
The Apostle John here is reinforcing his introduction of a distinction within the Godhead. He is NOT introducing a separate God, but a distinct and unique Being within the Godhead.
3All things were made by him; and without him was not any thing made that was made.
By comparing scripture with scripture, we learn that the Word is Jesus Christ. Speaking of Jesus Christ, Ephesians 3:9 teaches us: “And to make all [men] see what [is] the fellowship of the mystery, which from the beginning of the world hath been hid in God, who created all things by Jesus Christ:”
Knowing now that Jesus Christ was already in the beginning a unique, distinct Being intimately face-to-face with God and God, let us consider what else the scriptures teach us about Jesus Christ.
Colossians 1:12-18 “12Giving thanks unto the Father, which hath made us meet to be partakers of the inheritance of the saints in light: 13Who hath delivered us from the power of darkness, and hath translated us into the kingdom of his dear SON: 14In whom we have redemption through his blood, even the forgiveness of sins: 15Who is THE IMAGE OF THE INVISIBLE GOD, the firstborn of every creature: 16For by him were all things created, that are in heaven, and that are in earth, visible and invisible, whether they be thrones, or dominions, or principalities, or powers: all things were created by him, and for him: 17And he is before all things, and by him all things consist. 18And he is the head of the body, the church: who is the beginning, the firstborn from the dead; that in all things he might have the preeminence.”
These six verses in Colossians 1 teach us many truths. I have emphasized a few and they are:
1. Son
2. The image of the invisible God
3. By him were all things created
4. He is before all things
5. By Him all things consist
6. He is the Head of the body, the church
7. He is the beginning
8. He has preeminence in all things.
Let us consider these scriptures as they teach us so much in so few words.
Firstly, the Word, Jesus Christ, we learn from verse 13 is God’s Son. To again quote what my dear preaching brother wrote: “God gives you and me a Savior who is present with the Father. There is one little word in the second phrase of verse one that is a powerful little word. It gives us tremendous insight into our Savior, His Person, and His relation to God the Father…The Word, our Lord Jesus Christ, before anything was created, was in intimate and perfect fellowship with God the Father.
This little Greek word also tells us that our Savior has a distinct personality. He was no impersonal concept such as the Greeks had of “the Word.” O no! He is a person. Being face to face with the Father tells us that the Word has a distinct personality and relates to the Father as a unique individual, as a person.” Indeed! The apostle Paul here reveals to us what this unique, intimate relationship indicated by the word “πρὸς” is. It is a Father and Son relationship!
Secondly, verse 15 teaches us that the Word, Jesus Christ, the Son of God is the image of the invisible God. The Greek word here for image is “εἰκὼν” from which our English word icon is derived. If you are familiar with the Greek Orthodoxy, you know that icons (images) are a part of their worship tradition. However, God only has ONE image, His Son!
This image of the invisible God was with His Father as His Son before creation. Some will scoff at this thought, but it is exactly what the scriptures teach. Consider the following in Genesis 1:26: “And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness.”
Colossians 1:15 teaches us that God is invisible. Was man created invisible? No! Man was created in the image of God, in the image of the Word, Jesus Christ, the Son of God! Jesus Christ is the image of the invisible God!
Thirdly, verse 16 teaches us that God’s Son was the medium of creation. The scriptures also teach us that God created all things. Genesis 1:1 “In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.” The Word was God. Here is more scripture proof of the unique Being of the Word, Jesus Christ, God’s Son.
By this verse we know that the Word, Jesus Christ, the Son of God was (and yet is and ever shall be) God as well as God's medium of creation.
Fourthly, verse 17 teaches us that the Word, Jesus Christ, God’s Son is before all things. This must be so. If He created all things, he must be before them.
Fifthly, He was, is and shall ever be the sustainer of all His creation. All of creation owes its existence and continuance to His power.
Sixthly, He is the Head of the body, the church. The Word, Jesus Christ, God’s Son is the head of the body, the church. This is a metaphor to describe the unique relationship that the Word, Jesus Christ, God’s Son has with God’s elect. These elect stand in a special relationship with God only as they are united as a body to their Head, the Word, Jesus Christ, God’s Son.
Seventhly, He is said to be the beginning. If He created all things and is before all things, then He must be the beginning of all things.
Lastly, due to all of the previous facts, the Word, Jesus Christ, God’s Son is uniquely preeminent in all things.
Lord willing, I will continue on later.
The point regarding "image" is very interesting. At first glance it might seem unimportant to know of His "manhood" before the incarnation, but it actually touches many important events and doctrines throughout the whole OT. Great post. JS
